EQUINIX ME1 CONNECTS MELBOURNE’S FUTURE

In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, this landmark facility has been built to support global connectivity and sustainable innovation.

Designed to meet the growing demands of digital transformation and interconnection, the Equinix ME1 Data Centre, in Lorimer Street, has set the scene for a facility that will help strengthen Melbourne’s digital economy, support business growth and enhance the city’s smart infrastructure.

ME1 is the definition of reliability and efficiency. Delivered by FDC in 2016, it was Equinix’s first data centre in Melbourne, extending their presence beyond Sydney, and is a vital addition to Equinix’s global network, connecting businesses across five continents.

The 7,000sqm project was a comprehensive effort that included building the framework for two data halls and a modern office space. Within just nine months, the first data hall (Colo 1), covering 1,000sqm, was fully operational. The team also completed the office fitout and security systems while preparing the second data hall (Colo 2) for future fitout and use.

Key features include insulated panel walls, Unistrut ceilings and a design that supports future expansions. ME1 includes over 2,500 square meters of colocation space and capacity for 1,500 cabinets at full build.

The facility’s advanced features encompass sustainable technologies, such as indirect evaporative air coolers, which adapt to Melbourne’s weather conditions, and high-level security including 24/7 CCTV monitoring, biometric scanners, smart card readers, and on-site security personnel.

Completed in just 10 months, three months ahead of schedule, the project was a masterclass in managing demanding conditions and resolving technical complexities—all while maintaining stringent safety and quality standards.

Using advanced Building Information Modelling (BIM), the FDC team managed the installation of high-voltage services from Lorimer Street and tackled significant hurdles along the way.

Early excavation works revealed significant asbestos contamination, far exceeding initial reports. What began as minimal anticipated remediation, soon escalated into a substantial asbestos removal effort, requiring program adjustments and close collaboration with regulatory bodies.

The project was divided into nine sections to support the adjustments while maintaining the delivery schedule, allowing steel erection to commence while ensuring safe and compliant handling of hazardous materials. Multiple inspections by WorkSafe and the CFMEU Safety Unit praised the site’s systems and processes, which prioritised worker safety and minimised cost exposure for the client.

Additional challenges included managing the site’s high water table as a result of its proximity to the river, and meeting strict security requirements due to the neighbouring Defence facility.

Designed in collaboration with Aurecon and Cox Architects, the facility prioritises operational reliability and sustainability, and was awarded Leadership in Energy and Global Design (LEED) Gold Certification, a globally recognised green building certification, indicative of healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. The Equinix ME1 Data Centre highlights the role of infrastructure in driving global connectivity and economic growth. It’s a project set to leave a lasting legacy in the city’s built environment, as it continues to shape the future.
