A major upgrade of the standby power system was carried out at the AMP’s 50 year old building at 33 Alfred Street, Sydney. AMP operate a number of business critical services from the building, it is therefore essential that reliable standby power is available. The capacity of the standby power system was improved through the provision of new generators, control systems and switchgear.
The works included the installation of three new generators, new main switchboards, submains, provision of ancillaries and new distribution boards.
Site access and delivery of components were major challenges faced by FDC Technologies, requiring police and council approvals and the implementation of a traffic management plan. Delivery was staged out of hours for the three new standby diesel generators, four large cooling units and two condenser water pumps. The plant was craned from carriers, dismantled for transport and lowered to the building sub-basement located below sea level, which created several associated risks for the project including excavation of the basement slab for new generator plinths.
