FDC recently collaborated with DEXUS to undertake refurbishment work at Barnardos Australia Auburn Family Centre.

Barnardos Australia is a non-government, non-denominational child welfare charity, with a 130 year history in caring for children and a focus on long term support. Barnardos Australia helps to stop child abuse by finding safe homes for abused children through foster care and adoption, and also working with families to prevent abuse happening in the first place. www.barnardos.org

The refurbished premises at the Auburn Centre which will help improve the lives of children in our community. The project included constructing a new reception area, renovating the children’s playrooms, repairing flooring, painting 3 play areas, connecting corridors and reception area, creating a new formal reception area, knocking down walls to open up two play areas to become one, replacing doors and glazing sections throughout and the installation of new and effective storage shelves and cupboards.

FDC Construction & Fitout’s Design Development Manager, John Paton, said renovating Barnardos Auburn Long Day Care Centre was an extremely rewarding and positive experience for all the volunteers involved. “We are committed to supporting the work of Barnardos Australia and we were delighted to be involved with DEXUS in creating a nicer environment for children to feel supported and cared for,” he said.

This is the second time DEXUS and FDC have helped the Auburn Family Centre. In 2011 both companies refurbished the Centre’s four accommodation units, which had fallen into disrepair and were in need of an upgrade.

For months, twin babies develop nestled together in the womb.

Now thanks to a donation of $10,580 from the FDC Charity Committee team, twins can continue to 'stay in touch’ once they are born, while receiving life-saving treatment in the Neonatal Critical Care Unit at Mater Mothers’ Hospital.

The Mater Mothers’ Neonatal Critical Care Unit provides 24 hour care for seriously ill and premature babies in the 79 cot space unit, which includes intensive care, high dependency and special care cots, making it one of the biggest neonatal critical care units in Australia.

According to Mater Director of Neonatology Dr David Knight, twin babies are generally born at least two weeks premature and sometimes need intensive medical care.

The funding was used to purchase a new customised twin cot, enabling specialists to give twin babies the best possible medical support while keeping them close together.

“Twins settle better in twin cots and it’s also much nicer for the parents to know their babies are together,” Dr Knight said.

Recently the ladies from FDC's Sydney office were invited to a site visit of the Qantas Campus in Mascot.

Hosted by the Fitout division, attendees were able to witness another project milestone with the completion of the new B Wing which is home to almost 1,000 Qantas employees.

The move into the completed building has been the largest move of Qantas employees in the campus transformation to date. Like their neighbours in the A and D Wings, those working in the B Wing have access to innovative technology, a greater number of meeting spaces and a more open plan, collaborative workplace.

The tour also included a walk through of the ‘hub’ which is a huge construction stage on the facades of the campus buildings.

The day was a great chance for the ladies to get out of the office and an opportunity to gain an educational insight into one of FDC's projects.

Building C is located approx 5km north of Sydney’s CBD and is part of the Gore Hill Technology Park developed by Lindsay Bennelong Developments. It is the second building within the technology park designed by Leffler Simes Architects and delivered by FDC.

Construction of the 21,000sqm, 7 storey building with two carpark basement levels, commenced July 2011, and was handed over on time and on budget in December 2012. Completion of the Fox Sports integrated fitout, also coincided with the base build handover, and included two production studios, one news studio, a data hall, specialist control rooms, voice over booths, and other broadcast related areas throughout the fitout.

One of the critical milestones of the project was achieved in July 2012, when the ground floor data hall was handed over on time and dust free to Fox Sports’ specialist broadcast contractors, while construction on all other floors continued. Another major milestone of note occurred in early November 2012, giving Fox Sports early access to the ground and lower ground floors to allow them to broadcast from their master control and presentation suite areas, also while construction continued in and around these floors.

Other technical related design and construction parameters included achieving specified acoustic criteria, construction of faraday cages to block radio frequencies, back-up power infrastructure and other specialised electrical and mechanical services.

All stakeholders are extremely pleased with the finished product, being the integration of an attractive modern commercial building with the latest in television broadcast facilities.

FDC Charity Committee (FDCCC), in collaboration with the FDC Work Life Balance team recently held a Cambodian CookOff in aid of the Matesabroad Foundation, an Australian charity established in 2004 to relieve suffering in developing countries caused by poverty, illness or lack of education.

Since inception, Matesabroad has focused its support on an education program to improve the prospects of the poor children of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The organisation currently supports five schools in slum communities of Phnom Penh targeting the poorest children; those unable to afford to attend Government schools. Through this program Matesabroad hopes to break the poverty cycle in which these children are trapped.

In June this year Sophie Cottle will be travelling to Cambodia to take part in an immersion program run by Matesabroad.

FDC’s own Leading Hand, Marc Anthony, and wife Rachael, were kind enough to cook a delicious array of Cambodian specialties including chha ban-leh (stir fried vegetables with squid, Cambodian-style green chicken curry and fish cakes with coriander, chilli and lemon dressing. A big thank you to Marc & Rachael for their efforts in producing this fantastic feast for FDC.

At the conclusion of the lunch a fun pie throwing competition was staged. Pies were auctioned off with the highest bidder purchasing the right to throw a pie at their manager’s face. Several staff members seized this rare opportunity!!

The lunch provided a terrific cultural experience for the 80 employees that attended with proceeds from the event amounting to over $3,000.

FDC’s Charity Committee presents Nadrasca with hoist

FDC’s Charity Committee recently acquired a hoist for Nadrasca, Victoria, that will allow Nadrasca clients to enjoy hydrotherapy in the in-house pool.

Established in 1967, Nadrasca’s purpose is to establish and develop a range of services and provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Currently over 350 people with a disability have been given employment opportunities, and Nadrasca directly employs approximately 150 permanent, part time and casual staff across their services to assist their clients.

	Services include:-
	- Nadrasca Industry - A Disability Supported Employment Service
	- Community Options - Day programs & activities for persons with significant disabilities
	- Accommodation Services - 24 hour care and independent living as well as recreational and holiday programs
	- Seniors @ Nadrasca

The hoist was presented to Nadrasca at the end of March at a ceremony addressed by Nadrasca’s General Manager, Raeoni Turner, at which there was a demonstration by Nadrasca’s client, Wayne, who used the hoist to exit the Witt Street pool. Before the installation of the hoist, Wayne had been unable to access the hydrotherapy pool for five years; now both he and the staff are very excited that he is again able to use this facility again.

FDC staff were also given a tour of Nadrasca’s head office and the warehouse where clients carry out their work activities: everything from filling up jars with McCormack dried herbs to pulling apart Telstra rental phones for recycling.

This year FDC stepped up to be the principal sponsor for the annual PCA Corporate Golf Day.

There were a range of activities at each of the 18 holes with FDC offering prizes for the Fun Design Challenge (hyperlink) – contestants having to design new digs for Julia Gillard at Rooty Hill; Longest Drive and the big one….. the chance to win $20,000 for sinking a hole in one! Although a player did get within 2 metres of the hole, no one was able to claim this prize on the day.

Our congratulations go to the following winners of the FDC sponsored holes:

	Hole 1: Longest Drive

	Winner: Michael Robinson (Sweett Group)

	1st Runner-up: Stephen Carroll (CBA)

	2nd Runner-up: Brian Healy (Enstruct)

	Winner: Northrop Engineers Team

	1st Runner-up: Trevor Hamilton (Nettletontribe)

2nd Runner-up: Lisa Schultz (Ceilector Ceiling Solutions)

FDC’s Oxley House warehouse conversion at Donkin Street, West End, has recently been announced as a finalist in the Dulux Colour Awards ‘Commercial Exterior’ category. The façade upgrade was completed by FDC (QLD) last 2012 and was a collaborative effort between Dexus Property Group, Kimberley Alford and TONIC Design Pty Ltd.

The Dulux Colour Awards celebrate the imaginative use of colour on buildings whereby architects and interior designers are able to transform the three dimensional spaces they create. Dulux has recognised inspirational thinking in the industry rewarding those involved with producing these projects for the last 27 years. Entrants need to have applied colour to the third dimension in a creative, talented manner.

The work of influential architects and designers from Australasia - providing an inspirational showcase of colour in the built environment - will be judged by an esteemed panel of design leaders. The finals will be announced on 20th March at a special event in Melbourne.
Best of luck to all finalists.

FDC (QLD) are nearing the final stages of the $32 million Toll Intermodal project.

Recently, slab PT13 - over 2,300sqm of post tension heavy duty concrete – so a significant piece of the container loading yard operation, was put in place. Another significant milestone for the project was the handover of West 1 and West 2 rail lines allowing Toll the full use of the west end of the FCL facility.

FDC are now in the process of building the central two rails lines for the site (Central 1 and Central 2), which equates to approximately 720 lineal metres of track placement .

Weather permitting, FDC should see all track works completed by the end of April 2013.

It was fantastic night, and a fun time was had by all. There are already plans for another rematch, along with further group social events during the year.

FDC Construction were engaged under a lump sum design and construct contract to deliver the building. This included the design and construction of a chamber substation on the ground level of the building to provide power supply. To add to the complexity of the project, FDC were required to maintain access over a shared driveway which was used by the neighbouring building for basement parking. The FDC project team were also required to work around various events held within the Olympic Park precinct including the V8 Supercar racing and Easter Show, both of which restricted access to the site.

Whilst undertaking construction of the base building, FDC managed to negotiate the design and construction of the internal fit out for Thales, an international defense organisation . The fit out contract included new office space across all five levels, a fuel tank room within the basement, reception area, boardrooms, offices, training rooms and quiet rooms, data hall and open plan work space. High level access control, security and acoustic treatment were critical for Thales, and the design, co-ordination and commissioning of these works was a major focus to ensure the brief was achieved. The integration of Thales fit out complicated the base building completion, however successful management by the FDC achieved a positive result for all parties.

The FDC Cystic Fibrosis Swim Team did a great job on Saturday at the Wollondilly Leisure Centre, Picton (97km South of Sydney CBD). Swimmers came from all over Sydney to participate in this second Cystic Fibrosis Swimathon. The total proceeds of the entire fundraising project, including the swimathon, were over $ 115,000!

Thank you to all FDC-ers (and families) who contributed, be it swimming or counting laps, gathering food and caring for kids, urging on those tiring and getting our team tally to over 600 laps. Overall, all the swim teams combined managed to swim over 64 kilometres !!

Special mention must be given to Jessica ”The Jet” Oancea who swam an amazing 160 laps on her own! Big Dave “The Dolphin” Lemme delivered 100 laps, James “Magnussen” Hamer managed 42, with his wife Kirsten adding her own 50 laps to the total. Con proved he can talk underwater and pushed out 60 laps, with his daughters Ella and Abbi adding another 16 between them. Rod Jamieson managed to do 30 laps, book 23 dates with the local poolside ladies and clean up the entire raffle prizes (purchasing 6 out of the 8 raffle books). Rod’s sister Lisa was a great lap counter, hanging in for hours on end. Tim Spudic again proved handy with the marquee, ensuring some protection during the changing hot / cool / cloudy / rainy day. Thankyou also to Ash who was PUSHED in to participate in the relay, with all her clothes on!! And to Jono Beavon and his family completing the day with their contribution to our grand total of 32 kilometres.

A fantastic day out. Thank you for your ongoing support.
